Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Michal Handzus scored the deciding goal in
the fourth round of the shootout, lifting the Los Angeles Kings to a 3-2
victory over the Dallas Stars.
The Kings' Jonathan Quick and Stars' Alex Auld were perfect through three
rounds of the shootout. Handzus began the fourth round and quickly shifted
forehand-to-backhand before putting a shot past Auld by the right post.
Mike Ribeiro was Dallas' last hope and appeared to score after Quick poke-
checked the puck off his stick. The referee ruled no goal, and replays showed
the puck hit off Ribeiro's skate before going into the net. The ruling was
upheld after review, as the Kings secured their fourth consecutive win.
Anze Kopitar and Alexander Frolov scored in regulation for LA, which has won
its last three games in overtime or a shootout. Quick made 25 saves.
"We seem to have a flair for the dramatic right now," Kings forward Justin
Williams said. "We are playing well, creating points, and still have a lot
more to give. That's the positive thing. We are not playing our best hockey
yet we're winning games. That definitely bodes well for us in the future."
Mike Modano and James Neal had the goals for the Stars, who have lost three of
four but earned a point in each of the losses. Auld also made 25 saves.
"We'll take the point. But it's hard knowing that we could have had more
points than we have," Ribeiro said. "LA's been playing pretty well lately. We
will take those points but we knew that we could have more if we played 60
minutes."
Neal got Dallas on the board just 1:22 into the game, when he one-timed a Brad
Richards' pass from the right circle.
The Kings evened the contest on a fast-break goal following a blocked shot.
Justin Williams picked up the puck as he raced through the neutral zone on the
right side, then sent a cross-ice pass to Frolov for a one-timer from the left
side at 4:12 of the second period.
Modano made it 2-1 in favor of the Stars nearly three minutes later on a
wrister, but Kopitar's 16th goal of the year came with eight seconds left in
the period to knot the game once more.
Quick stopped seven shots in the third, while Auld made three saves.
The teams had a 3-on-3 set up for the first 1:45 of overtime, but neither
capitalized.
