A huge nuclear reactor cap will be traveling through the Valley Thursday and it could cause traffic to back up.
Starting November 12th at 9 p.m., the truck carrying the cap, which is not radioactive, will be coming into the Valley on the wrong side of Interstate 10 just west of the Highway 111 eastbound on ramp. Currently, it's parked in Banning.
Traffic will be slowed on Interstate 10 until it crosses over onto Highway 111 at Snowcreek Canyon Road.
The truck will then travel down Highway 111 and turn south onto Racquet Club Drive traveling south, east onto Farrell Drive and then back to Highway 111/Vista Chino.
The load will travel east on Highway 111/Vista Chino to Gene Autry Trail and then north to Interstate 10.
The process is expected to take at least two days and the nuclear reactor cap will be moved between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Bigge Crane and Rigging Co. is moving the load from the Long Beach Harbor to the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station near Phoenix, according to
the company.
Motorists were encouraged to map out alternate routes. The CHP hopes to park the load about 20 miles east of Twentynine Palms later Friday morning, but the schedule is subject to delays.
This is the second of three lids that are set to be transported to Arizona, according to the Bigge Crane and Rigging Co.
