Thousands of fans turned out Friday night to watch as some of tennis’ biggest names ‘Hit for Haiti’ in an exhibition game at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden that helped garner a $1 million donation to the American Red Cross and brought out some witty humor from tennis great Andre Agassi.

The sold-out event started at 7 p.m. to the delight of 16,000+ fans in attendance, and thousands more watching the televised game.

A fundraising goal of $1 million was set for the event, and at the end of both matches, Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle and the owner of the BNP, presented a $1 million check to the Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund.

To help meet the fundraising goal, three buses with a total of 150 volunteers from the Riverside and Orange County chapters of the American Red Cross were bused in. They were walking around accepting donations throughout the match.

"[Haiti] took years to build, seconds to destroy," said Lois Beckman, developmental officer of the Riverside County American Red Cross chapter. "This is just one of many things the American Red Cross is doing to help out."

The American Red Cross was also hosting a booth throughout the remainder of the BNP Paribas Open to continue raising funds for the Haitian cause.

Let the Games Begin!

The Palm Springs High School band and visual chorus kicked off the night, followed by the presentation of colors by Twentynine Palms Marines.

Following a coin toss by Ellison, women’s play began with Justine Henin, Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, and Lindsay Davenport.

Navratilova and Henin won 8-6 over Graf and Davenport.

In this unique exhibition game, all four women were wearing microphones, and seemed to have just as much fun playing as the crowd did watching them play.

Four of the world’s most renowned tennis hit the court next for the event: Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal.

Sampras was teamed up with Roger Federer, the world's top-ranked men's player, in a doubles match against Agassi and Rafael Nadal, ranked third.

"It's an amazing experience to be here with these unbelievable friends and players,” Nadal said before play began.

Andre Agassi adjusted his pants to be more like the shorts his fellow players were wearing after some teasing from Pete Sampras.

Agassi Lightens It Up: "I got mad skills over here"

While Sampras and Federer took the match 8-6 to Agassi and Nadal, Agassi provided a lot of entertainment for the crowd with his fast-talking and game playing.

The men were also mike-ed up during play, and Agassi took full advantage of his ability to speak directly to the 16,100 fans.

“You better keep that away from me Rog.,” Agassi said to Federer as play began.

Agassi especially let Pete Sampras have a piece of his witty humor.

"You know what thousands of tennis fans are saying right now? Who are those two old bald guys playing with Nadal and Federer,” he said. "It's liberating... just embrace it."

He didn’t just keep the jabs at his opponents, either.

“Stop hitting [the ball] to Fed.!” he told Nadal. “Stay aggressive, Raf, stay aggressive.”

“I got that partner,” he shouted while cutting Nadal off from the ball at one point. But, when he missed it, he came back with a laugh, “I used to have that partner.”

“Thirty-love. We’re in the lead.”

The crowd ate it up. So Agassi kept ‘em coming.

"I just gotta comment on something" he said to Federer. "You're not very intimidating you know."

"I stay neutral,” said Federer. "Swiss."

At one point, though, all the bantering got a bit awkward when Agassi gave Sampras some heat for being “a bad tipper.”

Sampras fired back by giving his impression of Agassi, walking around like an old man in pain while playing.

But Agassi came back with his own impression of Sampras— by pulling out his empty pockets saying he’s too broke to tip any money.

Appearing upset at Agassi’s actions, Sampras tried to clear up his name after that: “I’m not a bad tipper, alright.”

While it did seem tense throughout the ‘tipping’ ordeal, after his victory Sampras said of Agassi: “It got a little tense with Andre… but we’re friends.”

To wrap up a fast-paced night, legendary singer Tony Bennett sang “Smile,” and attendees were able to witness a fireworks show.
