At the Palm Springs Police Department, they are mourning the loss of "Ike"-- a K-9 officer shot and killed early Sunday morning, in the line of duty. But for another police dog, in Desert Hot Springs, the work of fighting crime is just getting started.
"Zeus" is a 2 year old German Shepherd now fighting crime in the city.
The dog and his handler, Officer Miguel Preciado, will be working the night shift, responding to burglary calls and sniffing out drugs.
They've been training for months, acutely aware of the potential dangers.
Sunday morning, Palm Springs Police K-9 "Ike" was shot and killed by wanted parolee Francisco Gabriel Durazo. Police then killed Durazo.
"Zeus" is described as "very friendly" and will live full time with Officer Preciado and his family, including his two small children.
Officer Preciado says he and his partner are looking forward to making a difference.
The name "Zeus" was chosen by students at the "Desert Hot Springs Alternative Center" and it means "living."
A great name for a new K-9 officer, as we say goodbye to another.
