Construction is expected to begin Tuesday on a $16 million overhaul of the Indian Canyon Drive interchange at Interstate 10 in Palm Springs, a city official said.

The reconfiguration of the Indian Canyon bridge is part of a Coachella Valley-wide interchange improvement project that began in February with work on the Ramon Road and Gene Autry Trail interchanges, said Lee Husfeldt, city director of Neighborhood and Community Relations.

Improvements will include the replacement of the existing bridge over I- 10 with a six-lane overpass, reconstruction of parts of Indian Canyon Drive, Garnet and 20th avenues, along with widening of the on and off ramps. Two traffic signals will also be installed.

Several lanes will be closed Sept. 13-14 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. so crews can set up barricades and install revised lane striping on the freeway and ramps, Husfeldt said.
On both nights, the westbound exit ramp at Indian Canyon Drive will be closed to traffic. Traffic will be detoured to the Gene Autry Trail exit.

The project, which is funded in part by federal stimulus dollars, is being constructed by Indio-based Granite Construction Co. It is expected to be completed in 2012.
