Hundreds of people headed to the Empire Polo club in Indio Saturday for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.
Cancer is something that has affected many of us in some way. That's why walkers and runners will go round the clock in the battle against cancer to raise money and to celebrate survivorship.
Rosie Estrada was 28 years old when she found out she had breast cancer, she said her biggest fear was she wouldn't be able to have the big family she always dreamed of having.
"I was told I couldn't have anymore kids because of the chemotherapy," said Estrada.
Now, Rosie has been cancer free for 15 years. Contrary to what doctors told her she had two children. As a survivor she said its important to participate in events like this that raise awareness about cancer.
"Just donating and helping makes a big difference for everybody else," said Estrada.
From food to crafts all of the funds raised will go to the American Cancer Society.
"There's like 25 of us, my sisters, mother and friends," said participant Veronica Galvez.
Veronica Galvez said her entire family loves to participate. She lost her son when he was 13 just years old.
"He passed away almost four years ago from cancer," said Galvez.
Whether you're a cancer survivor or know someone who has had cancer, participants say the message is clear.
"Find a cure for this disease."
The 24 hour walk will end Sunday morning at 9 a.m. and Saturday night at 9 p.m. there will be a candle light ceremony.
