DUI Checkpoint in Palm Springs

UPDATE 03-08-10: The Palm Springs Police Department released the following results following the checkpoint that was held in the 1900 block of E. Ramon Road.
- 564 vehicles were screened.

- 33 vehicles were sent to secondary screening.

- 3 DUI arrests were made.

- 13 citations were issued.

- 10 vehicles were towed.

Palm Springs Police will be conducting a DUI and driver's license checkpoint Friday.

The checkpoint is scheduled for Friday, March 5, 2010.

  • Impaired driving is a deadly crime that is still prevalent throughout America and is especially common among young males age 21 to 34.

  • All 50 States, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico have established a threshold making it illegal per se to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 grams per deciliter or higher.

  • According to the most recent California Office of Traffic Safety statistics available, the total number of fatalities on California roadways decreased 14.1% from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,434 in 2008. This is the lowest number of fatalities since the federal government began record traffic fatalities in 1975.

  • DUI related fatalities decreased 9.1% from 1,132 in 2007 to 1,029 in 2008. Since 2005, DUI related fatalities have dropped 20.1%.

  • In 2008, 30% of all traffic fatalities in California were DUI related.

  • Statewide DUI arrests have increased 5.4% from 203,866 in 2007 to 214,811 in 2008.

Funding of this project is provided through grant monies provided to the City of Palm Springs from the State of California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
