A man who suffered major injuries when he crashed his motorcycle Friday in Cathedral City admitted to officers that he had been drinking and was already on probation for misdemeanor DUI, according to police.
45 year old James Derek Safrans of Desert Hot Springs, was found lying in a northbound lane of Palm Drive near Paul Road around 1:25 a.m., said Sgt. Corwin de Veas of the Cathedral City Police Department.
Safrans' wrecked motorcycle was found about 40 feet north of him, de Veas said.
The rider, who had facial trauma and was drifting in and out of consciousness, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center, the sergeant said.
Safrans reeked of alcohol and admitted to drinking several beverages earlier in the evening, according to de Veas.
He pleaded guilty last August to a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence and was sentenced to three years probation, according to court records.
A judge ordered him to complete a three-month first offender DUI program, the records show.
