The largest city in the valley is seeing its share of crime with two murders in just three weeks.
Indio police are calling the shooting death of a 28-year old man Wednesday a murder.
This marks the fifth murder to take place in Indio so far this year. To put that number in perspective, that's the total number of murders the city had in the whole year in 2009.
"The challenge is that we still have the rest of the year and then obviously the clock starts over," said Ben Guitron, spokesman for the Indio Police Department.
In 2008, Indio reported three murders.
Of the five reported this year and last, Guitron says only two appear to be gang related. "Most of them are either some sort of dispute of business or an argument ensues or whatnot. We also have to consider the city of Indio is the largest in the valley."
Murrieta is another city in the region with a population size just slighly larger than Indio. That city had one murder last year and none in 2008.
In this video report, KPSP Local 2's mobile journalists Arti Nehru and Brandon Carrillo got reaction from some Indio residents.
