A high speed pursuit suspect escaped into an Indio neighborhood Monday after ditching his car and running away, police tell KPSP.
The suspect-- described as Latino, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds -- apparently led a California Highway Patrol officer on a chase from Interstate 10 to the Monroe Street offramp, according to Ben Guitron of the Indio Police Department. The person then ditched their car about two miles south of the interstate, at the intersection of Clinton Street and Lido Avenue, and took off on foot.
Indio police joined in the search with the CHP for the suspect, but left the scene when they still hadn't found the man at about 10:35 a.m., Guitron said.
Nearby Indio High School was notified of the search, but was not placed on lockdown, Guitron added.
The chase began after a CHP officer had tried to stop a blue Dodge Durango for a traffic violation around 9 a.m., but the motorist took off speeding, said CHP Officer Ramon Perez.
The suspect was dressed in a white long-sleeved shirt, khaki shorts, long white socks and white tennis shoes and wore a black baseball cap. Anyone
with information about his whereabouts was asked to call the CHP at (760) 772-8911.
