Update: American Cab says they will pick up extra cabs if Classic Yellow Cab leaves.

Classic Yellow Cab says they are the only cab company to service outside the Palm Springs area 24/7.

"We have the best dispatch," said cab driver David Rigmaiden. "We have the best computerized system."

But to make that equipment economical, Classic's General Manager James Braico says the costs need to be spread over more than just 50 cabs - they want 90.

So they went to Sunline Transit - who managers Valley cab companies - and asked to be allowed to have more.

Here's the problem - under Sunline's system, there can never be more than 180 cabs in Coachella Valley and we're already at the limit.

So to meet Classic's demand, they would have to take cabs from another franchise.

Classic doesn't want to leave - but if they can't make their bottom line, they may have no choice. Leaving a lot of their drivers with no jobs.

"If our whole company tries to go to other companies they're going to fill up fast," Rigmaiden said.

Rigmaiden says it's frustrating to work through the slow season only to have the company possibly pull out just before business picks up.

Being a frequent user of the Desert Taxis for many years, I have seen many changes, both good and bad, but the good current changes and improvements have come after the new criteria was set in place. In every instance, the cabs have been clean, newer, drivers appear to be more polite. This change will go a long way to helping the tourism business throughtout the CV. I also noticed that the American Cab Company, I believe, has a new maintenance facility right by I-10 and the Indian Canyon exit. This should probably help the folks in Desert Hot Springs, Mission Lakes - North Palm Springs Train and Bus Station areas.

At the price of a cab ride these days, they should all be out of buisness. That said, who the heck ever made sunline GOD of the valley? Customer service is job none. Unelected people running something that has that much power, and making their money off public funds. Something is wrong with that.
