The man struck and killed by a truck while riding his bicycle was identified on Sunday.  He is 36-year-old Milen Dimitrov of Palm Springs.

The accident happened early Saturday morning around 6:30 a.m. on Highway 111 just north of Overture Drive in Palm Springs.

Police had a portion of the road closed for several hours Saturday morning to investigate.

Some bicyclists say these types of accidents seem to be increasing.

"Do you feel safe as a bicyclist? its a feeling that's there all the time and you just kind of get used to it."

Bicyclist Scott McKelvey says this accident is something that is all too familiar for him.

As a salesman at Palm Springs Cycler and a cyclist for many years he says now a days with people always in a rush and distractions such as cell phones, it can be scary riding a bicycle on the streets.

"Cars are very unpredictable now with texting, cell phones its pretty bad that you can be very well seen and still have them act like they didn't see you," added McKelvey.

Police say the bicyclist described only as a male adult was riding with traffic on Highway 111 and the driver did pull over.

Meanwhile just a few days ago a bicyclist walked away with minor injuries after he was hit by an SUV in Cathedral City.
Police say when your on the road, be defensive.

"Remain aware of your surroundings whether your a cyclist or in a vehicle, said Palm Springs Police Sgt. Melissa Desmarais.

Police say drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this accident.

Seeing the picture of the wreck site there is just no excuse for the wreck, this was a straight road with unencumbered sight lines. The driver would have had considerable time to see and avoid the cyclist had the driver been: 1) paying attention to the road, and 2) concerned about the human being he was passing. In all 50 states the vehicle that is in front has the right of way, and the vehicle behind must adjust speed so as not to hit the slower vehicle and must pass with due care not to hit the slower vehicle. This did not happen in this case, why have charges not been laid?

Why don't you use some of that stimulus money to improve the krappy bike pathways among the streets & blvds. here in the desert. Especially, the death trap on Little Morongo in D.H.S. It is very narrow & dangerous. I can understand why that guy got nailed on Hwy. 111. Most of the bike routes have to be widened, so you are not riding so close to other automobiles. Get on the ball already. I've tried numberous times trying to get the path on Little Morongo widened. It is just a matter of time before someone gets killed there. ( God forbid) Wake up !

Use some of that stimulus money to improve the bike paths along narrow areas of some streets & blvds. Some paths are so narrow, you are lucky to make it through alive with the way people drive. I can undestand why that guy got killed on hwy.111
