From her salon chair at the Marinello School of Beauty in Cathedral City, Virginia Close can help clean up the massive oil spill off the Coast of Louisiana. "We need to clean it up, and we will," said Close of Desert Hot Springs. "Every bit helps!"
Every bit of hair, that is. The Beauty School is offering $2 haircuts through May 20th to help the cause. Clippings will be saved this week and shipped to an organization called "Matter of trust" based in San Francisco. Volunteers are stuffing the hair into nylons to make a hair mat or hair broom, which have been used successfully in the past, to help clean up spills in the Phillipines and San Francisco.
"I guess the density of the hair can help absorb the oil," said Ricky Fonteneau, the School Director in Cathedral City. Marinello Schools of Beauty is among around 370,000 salons across the country to recently sign up with Matter of Trust. The group is now asking salons to ship the hair clippings to warehouses being set up along the Gulf Coast.
Laura Johnson learned of the special program when she showed up for a haircut Thursday. "For it to be discounted, and it's going to a good cause..that's a win-win!" said Johnson.
