Four people were injured, two of them seriously, when a SUV sped through a stop sign in Indio, was hit by a car and smashed into a power pole.
The multi-vehicle crash was reported at 8:15 p.m. Saturday on Monroe Street at Avenue 50, said Fire Captain Lonny Olson of the Riverside County Fire Department.
The driver of a Dodge Durango was headed south on Monroe Street when he failed to stop at Avenue 50, Olson said.
The SUV was then hit by the driver of a Ford Expedition who was driving west on Avenue 50.
Witnesses said two people inside the Durango fled the scene, Guitron said.
Emergency crews found two people trapped inside the Durango when they arrived on scene, police said.
Those two people suffered serious injuries, were extricated from the SUV and taken to local hospitals.
One of them via helicopter, Olson said.
Two people in the Expedition were also injured and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Police were investigating whether the Durango was stolen.
