Facing budget cuts in the multi-millions, the Cathedral City City Council is considering declaring a fiscal state of emergency.
In large part, because of the state's budget problems and declining property values, Cathedral City needs cut $22-million out of its operating budget over the two years. That's equal to about 30% of the city's budget.
The assistant to the city manager said, if the council members vote to declare a "fiscal emergency," they would be creating a policy statement, to let the community and city staff know, budget cuts will have a major impact on the city, and could include further job and service cuts.
The city council planned to vote on the declaration Wednesday night, but delayed the vote due to a council member being absent. The council is scheduled to readdress the declaration at its next meeting on Wednesday, February 24.
