Palm Desert, Calif., (April 28, 2010) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert (BBBSD) received a $25,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. The organization was selected as the latest recipient of the KPSP Local 2 Coachella Valley Spotlight.
“Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert is part of the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States,” said Ronald Auen President of the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation. “It is an organization driven by an inspiring vision, and we are proud to help extend its reach in the Coachella Valley.”
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert opened its doors in 1996 and has since been reaching out to the children of the Coachella Valley. The organization’s mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships with mentors.
BBBSD serves about 525 children, ages 6-18, throughout the Coachella Valley in two distinct programs: Community Mentoring and Site-Based Mentoring. Over the past four years, the program has served 102% more children than prior to 2006. The local organization has been recognized nationally for its accomplishments by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
“This organization has been the leader in one-to-one youth service for more than a century, developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people. We are hopeful that the exposure they received this month will assist them in that mission and encourage others to get involved,” says Don Perry, KPSP Local 2 Vice President and General Manager.
